                              HISTORY AND OUTLOOK

                              Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST) was founded in 1960. Originally called Nanjing Institute of Meteorology (until 2004) it was designated as one of the national key institutions of higher education in 1978. The university occupies an area of 140 hectares (nearly 346 acres). Furthermore NUIST presently has almost 679,000 square meters of building space with more under construction and in the planning stages.

                              NUIST is co-constructed by the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, the China Meteorological Administration, the State Oceanic Administration and the Ministry of Education. It is on the list of China’s “Double First-class” construction universities and disciplines as well as Jiangsu high level universities. The university currently boasts 27 experimental teaching centers, including two listed in the Chinese National Demonstrative Experimental Teaching Centers.

                               

                              ADVANTAGEOUS DISCIPLINES

                              NUIST has an exceptional higher education system with undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral programs as well as post-doctoral research centers. The four disciplines of Geoscience, Engineering, Computer Science and Environmental Science and Ecology are in the top 1-percent of ESI rankings. The discipline of Atmospheric Science holds the top rank in China and has a global reputation.

                               

                              STUDENTS AND FACULTY

                               At present, NUIST has over 30,000 undergraduates, 4,000 postgraduate students, 1,800 international students and more than 1,700 full-time faculty members. There are more than 40 high-end scholars including academicians of Chinese, EU, French, and Russian Academies of Sciences, Yangtze River Scholars and National Distinguished Young Scholars. Over 88% of the full-time teachers have doctorates. In addition, 66% of them have experiences studying or working abroad for one year or more.

                               

                              INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

                              NUIST has established cooperative relationship with almost seventy (70) famous overseas universities and colleges from twenty-one (21) countries and regions including Yale University, Harvard University, the University of Reading, the University of Manchester, Carlton University, Delft University of Technology, Macquarie University and Monash University. NUIST set up the Confucius Institute at the University of the Bahamas and was admitted to such programs as Chinese Government Scholarship, the Confucius Institute Scholarship and Jiangsu Government Scholarship. To date, the WMO Regional Training Centre Nanjing at NUIST has become the world’s largest top quality training center and has trained over 3,600 senior meteorological and hydrological professionals for 157 countries and regions

                               

                              SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

                              NUIST attaches great importance to scientific and technological research and innovation. During the past five years, NUIST has undertaken more than 2,900 research programs including Project 973, Project 863, NSFC Programmes, and NSSFC Programmes. In 2018, alone NUIST applied for and was granted more than 160 national-level research projects. The annual research funds amounted to 350 million RMB. NUIST is a leading promoter of the commercialization of research outputs and the construction of China Meteorology Valley.
